ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Tofas Environmental Management System has been assessed and found to be in accordance with requirements of ISO 14001 standard by BVQI on November 20, 1998. Tofas is the first factory certified in Turkish automobile industry and also the second factory among FIAT factories world wide.
Re-certification was performed by BVQI in 21-23 January 2002.
After integration of OHSAS 18000, ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 , 3rd Certification was realised according to ISO 9000-2004 version in 2005.

Public Relations and Training
The below activities are performed during the year 2003-2006 in order to develop the environmental consciousness of our employees and of the public:
- In 5th of June World Environment Day, an environmental festival was made with the participation of children of Tofas employees. The wall pictures made by the children have been already exhibited around the treatment plant.
- During the 5th of June World Environment Day in 2004, a photography exhibition related with the pollution of Nilufer River was performed by Energy and Ecology Commitee of Tofas.
- Energy Efficent Project Prize was given to Tofas for the project of “ Driver Application for the Primer Paint Spray Booth Ventillation” in The Energy Efficiency Conference organized by EIEI
- There has been performed 17.500 men/hours of training in the last 6 years
- ISO 14000 certification of our supplier industries is supported by Tofas in conformity with our Purchasing Policy and there has been given seminars about “ISO 14000” to 71 supplier firms between the years 1997-2002. Furthermore another project has been started for the legal conformity audits of suppliers. 25 supplier firms were visited for this purpose.
- IMDS training programme was performed for the suppliers to comply the requirements of End of Life Directive, 2000/53/EC, in 2003-2006.
- Our Traditional Afforestation activities continued in 2004 -2006. During these activities performed for the past 10 years, totally more than 45000 young trees were planted.

Energy Management
The energy consumed in the last 5 years at Tofaş has been decreased by 40 %. Our energy consumption per automobile was realised as 0,21 tep (ton equivalent petroleum) in 2005.
The fact that the energy is the main input for the production process and that its price is continuously increasing have caused the necessity of improving the energy savings in our facilities.

Waste Water Treatment 400.000 m3 of waste water coming out from our Production Units has been purified in accordance with the Waste Water Control Regulations. The purified waters are analyzed once in a week in the laboratory of the facility and such analysis is reported officially.
Our discharge license has been extended until the date of July 2006 as the result of the controls and measurements by the Provincial Environment Directorate.
50.000 m3 of treated water has been recycled as irrigation water for green areas. This recycling meets 45 days of Tofas total water requirement.

Natural Resources Consumption and Air Pollution
- Important achievements have been realized at Tofas for decreasing the natural resource consumption in accordance with our environmental policy.
- Our water consumption has been decreased by 50% in the last 5 years and we reached down to 4.4 m3/auto in the year 2005. The recycling activities have important role in this success besides the development of projects directed to the use of less water.
- Wooden packeging conteiners was collected and reused for the transport of spare parts from Tofas to after sales services.
- It is banned the use of hazardous chemicals such as CFC, halon, asbestos, chlorinated hydrocarbons in the vehicles that are currently produced in Tofaş and in the production facilities.
The use of heavy metals such as chrommium, cadmium, lead and mercury has been limited or completely banned in accordance with 2000/53/EC Directive.
- An international coding system are applied to plastic parts above 100 grams to facilitate recycling
- Tofaş has been the first industrial establishment taking the “Emission License” for the first time at Bursa in the year 1996.The emission coming out from our chimneys are measured by official institutes every year in conformity with the emission license taken.
- Total solvent emission (VOC) per m2 surface painted in the year 2005 has been realized as 68 gr/m2. VOC emissions in the Paint Production Unit is monitored monthly and the improvement projects directed to lower such emission are being developed. There has been a decrease of 50% in the solvent emission quantity in the last 8 years as a result of these improvements.
- Our solvent emission per painted surface was 81 grams/m2 in the year 2003. The organic vapor emission created in the Paint Production Division is monitored every month and improvement projects are put into implementation to reduce it.
- The waste solvents generated during the color change operations are collected and recycled. The clean solvents recycled are re-used in the production line.
- The waste solvents that emerge during the painting operations as a result of the color change are collected and recovered before they merge into the water and atmosphere. The recovered clean solvents are reused in the production line.

Waste Management
Total waste recycling ratio of Tofas was increased 10% within 10 years and reached to 95%.
43.000 tons of waste was produced and 95% of these were recycled. Total economic value of these recycled waste is 4.6 million Euro per year.
1235 tons of hazardous waste was produced and 60% of these wastes are disposed in accordance with legal requirements by spending 155.000.Euro disposal cost. The remaining 490 tons of waste has been recycled in the plants having legal license.
Ecological ProductThe new emission standards that are called as Phase 3 (EUIII) are put into application in Europe starting from the date of January 1St, 2000. There has been ensured a 50% of decrease in CO emission of 50% and an 80% of decrease in HC and Nox emissions in the last 10 year together with new standards. The whole of the Tofaş products complies with the Phase 3 limit values.
- Noise Laboratory: The outer noise, internal noise and vibration tests are performed in conformity with European norms in order to avoid the noise pollution.
- Emission Laboratory: The exhaust gases of the test vehicle is analyzed and its compliance is determined according to relative standards and also at the same time the fuel consumptions are determined. Accreditation of the emission lab. to ISO17025 standart vae realised in 2004 by TURKAK.
